PS&S' Calvert Vaux Preservation Alliance Project Published in Hudson River Valley Review: A Journal of Regional Studies
PS&S is thrilled to announce that an article about our work completed for the Calvert Vaux Preservation Alliance entitled, "Realizing the Picturesque: the American Landscape, Calvert Vaux, and The Point" has been published in the Hudson River Valley Review: A Journal of Regional Studies!
The article, which was created by Emily Cooperman and Kyle Toth from our Cultural Resources Team, reviews the role that architect and landscape designer Calvert Vaux, co-designer of Central Park, had in converting a working farm into a picturesque country estate with panoramic views of the Hudson River Valley. The article also discusses the principles of the picturesque aesthetic during the mid-19th century and explores how and why designers like Vaux adapted these principles to create an American landscape identity. Emily and Kyle are currently adapting their research into tour narratives for the Calvert Vaux Preservation Alliance to provide visitors with guided walking tours of the site.
