City Island is a small community at the edge of New York City located just beyond Pelham Bay Parkin the Bronx, surrounded by the Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay. The City Island Bridge connects this community to the mainland and has slowly deteriorated over its 100-year history. To facilitate reconstruction of the Bridge, the NYCDOT plans to construct a temporary bridge which would pass through the City Island Esplanade.

PS&S professionals provided Landscape Architecture, Arboricultural and Site Civil Engineering services to the NYCDOT for the new City Island Bridge construction and restoration of the City Island Esplanade and Legion Triangle.

The work encompassed conceptual design through final construction bid documents, cost estimates and specifications, and design services during construction.

Tree protection and landscape design drawings were created for the City Island Esplanade in coordination with New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR). Detailed design involved the relocation and upgrade of the John S. Pasvankias Memorial and the restoration of the WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War Memorials. Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) drawings for the temporary bridge and new bridge construction were also produced for Final PS&E.

PS&S professionals also provided design services during construction for the redesign of Legion Triangle at the intersection of Bridge Street and City Island Avenue on City Island. Our design solution satisfied the Public Design Commission (PDC), the local Community and NYCDOT by incorporating the reuse of limestone blocks from the existing truss bridge, reorganizing pedestrian circulation with the existing war memorials, and adding plantings that provide a low key gateway treatment seen when entering or leaving City Island.
