FDR WATERBORNE INSPECTION AND REHABILITATION ANALYSIS

LOCATION: MANHATTAN, NY

CLIENT: NYCDOT

MARKET SECTOR: PUBLIC

DISCIPLINES INVOLVED

STRUCTURAL

*Project featured was performed by B. Thayer Associates and its professionals prior to joining PS&S.

PS&S professionals were retained to provide a structural inspection, load rating calculations, and rehabilitation design recommendations for the FDR DRIVE Northbound Bridge from East 42nd Street to East 49th Street. Originally constructed in 1952, the bridge structure is located underneath the United Nations viaduct. Here, the FDR Drive widens to accommodate the viaduct columns and the northbound roadway cantilevers over the East River. Due to the structure’s age and proximity to the brackish East River, the structure has deteriorated. NYCDOT is considering rehabilitation or replacement of the structure to meet current traffic and loading demands.

Scope of work included:

  • Gathering utility plans in the areas of construction and coordinating correspondences between the utility providers and the design team
  • Waterborne structural inspection
  • Identified and documented existing in-situ element conditions to calculate element section loss
  • All inspection results were documented in a report in conjunction with a load rating analysis and rehabilitation recommendations
