THE OPPORTUNITY
For its new High Tech High School, the Hudson County Schools of Technology used newly passed legislation to have the school constructed in a design/build process. PS&S, working under DMR Architects, teamed with Terminal Construction Company (TCC) to win the project as the design/build team.
THE CHALLENGE
Chief among the challenges of this intricate project was the schedule. The D/B team had only 28 months after award to design, permit and construct the 340,000 sf school on the 25-acre site at Laurel Hill in Secaucus.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
PS&S, in conjunction with the project team, secured all regulatory permits required to start construction months earlier than others believed possible. PS&S Geotechnical studied the site and designed an efficient foundation system to meet the demands of a challenging site. PS&S Site Civil Engineering and Survey services were completed on an expedited basis in order to fast track the permit process and allow the contractor to clear and prepare the site and start work in the timeframe required to maintain the project schedule. Work included interaction with several agencies. PS&S also provided environmental consulting services to the team to help the project adhere to the required environmental constraints of the site. PS&S worked with the design team in completing the structural design of the school to facilitate receipt of state DCA and associated local building department approvals required to start construction.
