MCVSD - HAZLET VOCATIONAL SCHOOL - SITE WORK REPAIRS

LOCATION: HAZLET, NJ

CLIENT: MONMOUTH COUNTY VOCATIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

MARKET SECTOR: EDUCATION

SIZE: APPROXIMATELY 2-ACRE SITE

THE OPPORTUNITY

PS&S was asked to perform professional design services for repair/reconstruction of the existing storm drainage system, grading and drainage improvements near the main entrance, and a new barrier-free walkway to the MCVSD Hazlet Vocational School. Services included architecture, site civil engineering, cost estimating, bid administration, construction administration, and closeout services.

THE CHALLENGE

The existing concrete storm drainage pipe system had deteriorated, resulting in underground seepage and surface sink holes along cracked pavement areas throughout the site. There was little grade change between storm system structures, with the storm pipe back-pitched heading off-site. Severe ponding was occurring at the main entrance to the school and barrier-free compliance did not exist from the school bus drop area to the main entrance. Exterior lighting was needed to improve visibility during evening adult school classes. A rear double egress door was also in disrepair and in need of replacement due to age.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

With little grade change across the site, the best solution was to replace the existing storm pipe with new HDPE to match exisiting pipe sizes. After video investigation, some of the existing pipe was discovered to be back-pitched to store water within the storm system. The design approach was maintained for storm water storage and slow stormwater release. The choice was also made to replace the existing reinforced concrete pipe with HDPE for increased storage and durability. The storm water system was extended at the main entrance with two area drains and an inlet structure to alleviate flooding, and the sidewalk entrance was fully replaced and extended from the barrier-free curb cut at the street to the main entrance door. Other paved areas were defined to be milled and repaved. A new sidewalk was added to extend the bus drop off area. New security lights and a timeclock control system was designed for the exterior of the school to improve visibility and security during evening classes. A new double egress door system was provided for the rear entrance of the school to improve security.
