THE OPPORTUNITY

To satisfy their NJ DOE five year reporting requirements, the Newark Public Schools District retained PS&S to prepare a Long Range Facilities Plan LRFP update. PS&S led a team of consultants that performed a Facilities Condition Assessment to document building health and safety conditions, updated 5-year enrollment projections, updated building capacities, and summarize school facilities planning.

THE CHALLENGE

Newark is the oldest public school district in the State of New Jersey. With over 75 school and approximately 37,000 students, the district is also the largest and most complex. PS&S leveraged their experience with the Newark district dating back to 2004, and his preparation of NPS’s 2015 LRFP.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

To assess the conditions of 75 school buildings over a 4-month period and update CAD plans, PS&S Architects & Engineers collaborated with New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Center for Building Knowledge to assemble teams of staff to visit, document, and index (FCI) facility conditions.

Using DeJong/Healy demographics and enrollment projections PS&S and NJIT CBK prepared planning analysis of school scenarios that were reported in a detailed 2012 LRFP Summary Report, and incorporated into a web-based software application turned over to the district.
