PARKERS CREEK CROSSING

LOCATION: OCEANPORT & LITTLE SILVER, NJ

CLIENT: NEW JERSEY AMERICAN WATER

MARKET SECTOR: PUBLIC

THE OPPORTUNITY

New Jersey American Water owns, operates and maintains a 36-inch diameter water transmission main which crosses over the Parkers Creek along Oceanport Avenue in the Boroughs of Oceanport and Little Silver, Monmouth County, New Jersey. The transmission main constructed of steel pipe, originally constructed 1993/94 and is supported by timber pile caps above to creek, adjacent to the roadway. Following an engineering assessment performed by Rioux Engineering, it was established the pile caps and pipe couplings were in need of replacement.

THE CHALLENGE

The transmission main was located off the roadway however due to the difficulty with access to the pipeline and it’s supports, traffic control and heavy equipment were utilized to remove the necessary components for replacement/rehabilitation. Coordination with NJAW was continuous during construction, to shut down the transmission main during the work and maintain water supply to all residents.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

PS&S prepared bid ready design documents for the rehabilitation of the existing 36” steel pipe, replacement of pipe couplings and pile caps. After an alternative analysis, PS&S designed an internal and external rehabilitation system for the existing steel pipe, designed new transition couplings with restraints and support systems. The timber pile caps were replaced with fiberglass reinforced plastic members, which would support the main across the creek. PS&S coordinated with Rioux Engineering during the design and construction phases of this work. PS&S performed construction inspection services during the construction and Rioux Engineering performed the final inspection of the completed project in February 2016.
