THE OPPORTUNITY
Riverbank Park is a landmark park, having been designed by Frederick Law Olmsted & Sons in the 1920s. The park has a baseball field with grandstand, soccer field, running track, tennis and basketball courts, children’s playground, and a field house/community center.
THE CHALLENGE
The park was closed in the late 1990s when the soils on the site were discovered to be contaminated. The contamination reflected the industrial history of the area going back to the mid 1800s. As part of a remedial action plan, the park has been capped and all facilities restored and upgraded. Improvements included adding sport lighting to the artificial turf soccer field and baseball field, a synthetic running track, new park lighting, site furniture, and playground equipment with a poured colored safety surface.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
PS&S provided site civil engineering and geotechnical services, and landscape architects were involved in the planning and design of the project, prepared the construction drawings, and monitored the progress of the work.
