STRUCTURAL

Bishop Quad is the historic center of the Rutgers University College Avenue Campus and the Bishop Quad Residence Halls were built in the 1920s and are comprised of four distinct concrete and masonry structures. PS&S and The Design Collective Architects performed a feasibility study for a renovation of the dormitories.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Rutgers University engaged PS&S to work with The Design Collective Architects to provide engineering services to identify the necessary structural modifications/upgrades, identify HVAC upgrades and new electrical/lighting requirements, establish an IT infrastructure and map out any utilities alterations as may be required.

THE CHALLENGE

The older construction and infrastructure of the Bishop Quad Residence Halls were not compliant with accessibility codes and did not match current program requirements at the university.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

PS&S worked with Design Collective and the stake holders at the University to verify the structural validity of the concept and to explore the possibility of upgrading the MEP systems to meet current university standards. The proposed systems for the concept were vetted in meetings with Rutgers’ Housing group and the University Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical group. The culmination of this effort was a comprehensive report which includes architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing concepts for the renovation, an ‘order of magnitude’ cost estimate based on the concepts and a suggested schedule to complete the renovation.
