THE OPPORTUNITY

The Trenton Town Center wanted to reinvent an urban infill neighborhood as a viable, sustainable community through transit-oriented design. The project consisted of nearly an entire city block of mixed-use program elements – residential, retail, office and parking – and will be a key part of the urban revival of downtown Trenton. PS&S provided architectural design and engineering (site civil engineering, structural, MEP) services.

THE CHALLENGE

Creating a “sense of place” while integrating the new construction with the diverse surrounding building styles and materials of Trenton’s downtown was the main challenge for the design team. Easy, inviting and direct pedestrian connection to the Trenton Train Station was a major goal. Also, dealing with vehicular access and parking needs posed particular challenges.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

The new center consists of three mid-rise to high-rise towers, totaling 825,000 square feet, with “green” roofs and concealed underground parking for 295 cars. The program included 250,000 square feet of office space, 270 apartment and condominium units, and a 50,000-square-foot retail base. The LEED Silver project incorporated design features which will use 50% less energy than comparable projects.
