BRIEF INTRODUCTION

PS&S provided geotechnical, site civil engineering and permitting services for the development of a 500,000 square foot refrigerated perishables distribution facility.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Wakefern Foods, the parent company of Shop-Rite Food Stores, sought a central location with easy access to significant roadway systems for distribution of perishable food products for the New Jersey market. Raritan Center, with direct connections to the NJ Turnpike, Interstate Route 287, The Garden State Parkway, and Route 440, offered this opportunity.

THE CHALLENGE

The site of a former dredge spoils disposal site. The property posed foundation design problems as well as the existence of fragmented wetlands created by the settlement of the dredge spoils.

THE PS&S SOLUTION

By surcharging and performing deep dynamic compaction, the soils were improved adequately to support the construction of a spread footing foundation and slab on grade building, saving substantial costs over the standard alternative of a pile-supported structure. The emergent wetlands were filled, and the loss of wetland habitat was offset by the creation of an enhanced wetland system located more appropriately within the existing onsite greenbelt at Raritan Center.
