ACUA WIND FARM
LOCATION: ATLANTIC CITY, NJ
CLIENT: COMMUNITY ENERGY INC.
MARKET SECTOR: ENERGY UTILITY
SIZE: 7.5 MW
PS&S provided environmental and engineering services for the siting of five wind turbines on the Atlantic County Utility Authority’s wastewater treatment plant site in Atlantic County, New Jersey.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Its location on the tidal flats in Atlantic City provided the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) with a unique alternate energy opportunity in the form of wind turbines. Prevailing winds at that location were perfectly suited for a wind farm. Design and permitting for this project broke new ground since this was the first commercial wind farm in New Jersey.
THE CHALLENGE
2.5 megawatts of electric power is required each day for the operation of the wastewater treatment plant. Geotechnical investigation for foundation design, NJDEP permitting for construction in tidal wetlands, Coastal Zone Management Compliance, and site planning were challenging aspects of the project.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
PS&S provided the following consulting services for the wind farm:
Coastal Zone Management Compliance
Wetlands Assessment
Environmental Permitting
Geotechnical Analysis
Foundation Design
Site Plan and Survey Preparation
PS&S obtained the necessary Coastal Zone Management approval, and a CAFRA permit for the project. PS&S’ geotechnical analysis and foundation design efforts resulted in pile-supported mat foundations for the five wind turbines. The site plan documented the optimum locations for the wind turbines within the wastewater treatment facility site.
