NORTH EAST GRID EXTENSION
LOCATION: NORTHERN NEW JERSEY
CLIENT: CONFIDENTIAL
MARKET SECTOR: ENERGY UTILITY
THE OPPORTUNITY
To provide a geotechnical engineering investigation and analyses for the foundation design of over 100 new steel monopole transmission towers with tower heights up to 180 feet and overturning moments up to 42,000 foot-kips.
THE CHALLENGE
The project alignment extended across multiple geologic regions consisting of dense glacial till, residual soils, shallow rock, and deep soft glacial lake sediments.
THE PS&S SOLUTION
PS&S used its extensive experience and in-house data to develop a cost effective approach to the investigation program, which consisted of a combination of soil test borings, probes, and cone penetration testing. Geotechnical recommendations and design parameters were provided for various foundation support alternatives, including drilled shafts, rock-socketed caissons, rock anchors, and intermediate and deep piles, depending on the subsurface conditions encountered. Services also included providing environmental oversight and surveying during the field investigation, on-site geotechnical consultation during foundation construction, and peer review of drilled shaft foundation designs.
